I was inspired to write today’s topic by two things that happened on the same day. At a girls' golf match, there was a dad following his daughter, as parents do, around the course, carrying a large stick. At first glance, I thought he was removing debris from the course, but instead, he carried it the entire day. People looked at him, wondering why, and I asked him. Come to find out, carrying the staff was intentional. He carried it to encourage his daughter to overcome any obstacle on her way to the green. When he leaned on the stick, it reminded her to relax, take a breath, and trust herself.
Then, when I got home, our grandsons were watching The Prince of Egypt. As you know, in the movie and in Scripture, Moses carried a staff with him, much like that dad did at the golf course. After leaving Egypt, God instructed Moses to stretch out his staff over the waters of the Red Sea, and they would part. God used Moses's staff as an example, a motivator, and a source of comfort or stability when Moses needed it.
So, let me just ask you, “Is it your time to carry a staff?” Now, I’m not suggesting that you walk through Wal-Mart with a staff. But I am saying that maybe God is asking you to carry a staff because He has bigger things in store for you, so you can walk towards your obstacle instead of avoiding it.
I’m confident that God has put something on your heart and has been trying to nudge you forward for some time, but you’ve been hesitant because you’re waiting on the burning bush to take action instead of grabbing a staff. Ready or not, this is your burning bush moment to decide. So will you fan the flames of the fire that’s burning inside of you by taking action, or will you stay stagnant in the safety and comfort of who you used to be?
To help you start your journey towards your Red Sea, you can do a few things. One, grab a stick or a long piece of wood and just sit alone with it. Hold it, pray over it, and acknowledge to God that you are ready to go and become who He’s called you to be. Next, stand up and declare aloud, “God, I will go where you want me to go. I will trust that you will part the sea and make the land dry, even if it appears muddy now.” Third, take one step and start walking across your yard with your staff, and say, “By walking across my yard, I commit to you with my actions to move where you’re asking me to go.” Lastly, stop and either stretch out your staff or slam it on the ground and say, “Here I am, Lord, let’s go through the water together!”
By taking these steps, you are setting things in motion that are beyond what you can imagine or even see. You’ve made a covenant with the Lord and declared to God the Father that your steps are now His and you’ll follow His path.
In conclusion, I know that you’re not Moses, but is it possible that God wants you to move in His direction because you’re the Moses that others around you need right now? I believe this is the moment that you’ve been waiting and praying for. So why can’t you be like Moses and live a legacy that impacts others for generations? I believe you can if you grab your staff and go.
