I was born in 1970, but my mom didn’t buy into the idea of flowers, peace, and rebellion against authority like the ’60s told her to. In our house, there was a round yardstick container, and it was full. And boy, does my backside still remember the yardstick. Then, as young parents, we visited some friends, and I realized that firm discipline didn’t need a yardstick; it only needed a water bottle. When one of their kids misbehaved, the mom would give one squirt. That mist of water made a big difference in their behavior. Today, those two little boys are now fathers themselves, instilling love and character into their kids.
Speaking of mist that makes a difference, how about this from James 4:14 that says, “Yet you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while, and then vanishes.” That verse hit home with me, and I hope that stirs something inside of you, too. I hope it motivates you to reassess things and take action. Here are three steps to help you make the most out of your mist so it matters today and for generations to come.
First, if your mist appears for a little while, then why not make the most of it while you still can? Start by doing the little things better than anyone else because they can make a big difference in a situation or in someone’s life. From this day forward, have the mindset to bless others rather than impress them by doing the little things. By focusing on the small details first and you’ll yield big results later. Trust it.
The second thing you can do is understand that your mere presence or your words matter to every person and in every situation. It’s like entering a room carrying a spray bottle and misting everyone you come in contact with. Your mist will resonate with someone when you genuinely value the person you’re interacting with and listening with intention. That’s cherished. Your mist matters and you’re the person to give someone love, hope, or hope today.
I believe that one of the truest ways to make sure that your mist matters for generations and for eternity is by spending time with those that matter most to you. Start by spending more time with God today than you did yesterday. Ask Him, “Lord, how can I make my mist matter for you today?” Then throughout your day, pray and speak with Him frequently so you’re aware of His presence. To me, it makes sense because not only does God know your tomorrow, He also knows what’s ahead of you today, and He wants to lead you through it.
Next, be intentional about spending time with your family. Now, I realize that your calendar and your responsibilities may not allow you to spend hours at a time, but an impromptu text, phone call, or note may be exactly what a family member needs right now. You’ll never know what they’re struggling with if you don’t love them today in the way they need. Remember no action is an action that’s felt, so reach out because your family needs contact from you in some way today and every day. The truth is, don’t you want your family to never dry off from the mist of your life? That’s a legacy, that’s a mist that matters for generations. Make no mistake, your life matters, so make your mist count.
