Who's Louder? #400

Think back to the last time you were in a room with a lot of people. Maybe it was a busy restaurant, a family gathering, a rock concert, or a sporting event. It feels like you were surrounded by voices all trying to get your attention in public. But the voices don’t stop in private either. Life has a way of turning up the volume, making it difficult to listen to just one voice. Yet somehow, you can still remember running when your mom called your full name or how the words of your spouse seem to rise above the crowd noise at a busy restaurant. You know their pitch, their tone, and how they speak directly to you.

That’s the goal of today’s Friday Focus: that you listen to the one voice that calls your name. That His voice gets and holds your attention above the noise of the world.

The voice that matters won’t be the loudest, but you’ll recognize it when you hear it.

Can I be vulnerable with you right now? I am struggling with which voice to listen to. I know what I want to do, but I keep getting pulled away. The world tells me to do this or that to become successful or rich. YouTube, Facebook, and podcasts demand my attention, telling me what I need to do or how I’m falling behind if I don't. It feels like everyone has suggestions about what’s safe to try and what to avoid. I'm not going to lie, there are times when I want to grab a pillow and scream into it, “Shut up!” because all the voices are drowning out the one that matters.

I’m glad there's another option. A voice that can be heard through the crowd. A voice that doesn't have to be the loudest because volume doesn't determine truth. Jesus says in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” To me, this is more than sheep wandering in a field. It's about a desire to hear, know, and follow the voice of the Shepherd. It's about turning down the world's voice so we can recognize the voice we long to hear.

Ultimately, it's about listening to His voice now instead of waiting. Because someday the world's noise will quiet. Job titles will be erased, and the number of Facebook followers won't matter. The applause, comparisons, and accomplishments will fade too. On that day, His voice will be the one we care about most. So why wait? Why not know Him so well today that we recognize His voice through all the noise?

So ask yourself, “Who’s louder?” Better yet, “Whose voice carries the most weight in my life?” If you don't like your answer, it's time to decide which voice you'll follow. I could say, “Choose wisely.” But I like, “Choose eternally.” Because at the end of the day, that’s the only voice we’ll want to hear.

The world may have a microphone, but God will always have the final word.
