Which Time Is It? #367

What was your first thought when you woke up today? If it were about all that you had to do, where you have to go or who you have to see, then you begin your day with stress and hurry instead of peace and purpose.
I hope to change your perspective about time and how to use it before your head hits the pillow tonight. The ancient Greeks addressed this issue and used two different words to describe time in their writings. One word was Chronos, which meant that time is measurable or sequential, like minutes and hours. They used the word Chronos to prioritize tasks, appointments, and organize their schedules. The second word was Kairos, but not for measuring time. Kairos is about viewing moments as opportunities. When people lived with a Kairos mindset, they treated every interaction, errand, and task as a part of the journey. They believed that every day was full of lessons, and they needed to be alert to make the best choice in that moment.
So, which one controls you? Is Chronos running your life, or are you enjoying the journey in Kairos? You may enjoy some moments living in Chronos; however, you will also find problems in between the moments. Or should I say that the problems will find you, causing stress and diluting the significance of the moments? The truth is that one day, no one will care about your schedule and the minutes you spent completing tasks. People will remember the moments that you spent with them. Today, you can choose to live a life measured in minutes or allow it to be measured in moments. It’s your choice who or what has control.
Now, I’m not suggesting that you should scrap your schedule and go all-in with Kairos. Just have a healthy perspective on each. For example, I write a “To-Do → To Done” list every night before bed to help me plan my day. Then, when I wake up, because my list is done and I can remember that today is a gift from God, and I should be thankful for every moment ahead. This small change relieves stress before I hit the door. Sure, I know that the world will try to clutter my day so I miss a moment, but at least I’m prepared for some of it. I believe that we can have a balance and a plan to live in both Chronos and Kairos on the same day, so we can prosper in the journey instead of being controlled by its responsibilities.
Jesus needs you today. He has a plan and a mission for you today. So He’s sending you into the next room you enter, the next conversation you have and has the instructions for the next task He given you to complete. Remember that today is a great day to live a great legacy, so make the most of your journey.
