Which Faucet Are You? #371

If you’d like to hear this message instead of reading it, tune in to the Living Your Legacy Podcast.

Not to boast, but every morning I read certain chapters in Scripture. I’d like to know how one person knew when he texted me, Revelation 3:16, that I had read chapter three that morning? Coincidence, I think not. Message, I think so. The Lord challenges both the church of Laodicea and us not to be lukewarm. If we question that, God even predicted our answer in verse 17 when He stated that you say you’re rich, you prosper, and you need nothing. Well, I beg to differ because we’re not rich enough nor prosperous enough to buy our way closer to God. And truth be told, we do need something, or someone, and His name is Jesus Christ.

We don’t want to be lukewarm in anything. We don’t want to be passive in our relationships, career, family, finances, faith, or even our health. Because staying as-is, or just getting by in a “paycheck-to-paycheck” mentality, leaves us in debt, with bad health, distant from our family, dissatisfied at work, and isolated from friends. Worst of all, our faith deteriorates, and one day we regret what could have been.

Last week, I talked about dreams and how God may speak to you in a dream. But today, I want to help you move closer to your dreams by setting worthy goals, identifying the two voices trying to get your attention, and moving you out of being lukewarm.

When it comes to goals, I’ve tried every tactic to help people set them. Big, small, daily, yearly, you name it, I’ve tried, but it still doesn’t resonate. Maybe small is the answer. For example, pick one area and set a worthy goal that you can achieve. Big enough to challenge you, but not too big that it stops you. Make your goal practical, like imagining it’s like a hot water faucet. You know it takes time for the water to warm up, but you turn it on anyway and wait for the result. So if you can identify one or two goals, have simple steps to achieve them, then you’re essentially turning on the hot water faucet of your goals.

Next, those voices that fight for your attention in achieving your goals, living your dreams, or drawing closer to God. These voices start before you even take action. They say things like, “I can do, or you can’t do that. I will, or you won’t try. I get to or you have to.” If you understand that before every decision you’ll ever make, there’s an internal dialogue wanting you to play it safe or live lukewarm, then you can pick the right one to listen to.

Start by repeating, “I can do this, or I get to go to work, or I will save $10 this week.” Sure, you have to be intentional and work at it, but the more you can drown out the negative voice, the louder the positive one becomes, and the closer you get to where you want to go. So the next time, the Bible is too thick, the mile is too far, or the ladder is too tall, just remember, you can take a step, you get to read one chapter, and you will climb one rung today.

God wasn’t just addressing the church of Laodicea, it’s for you too. He knew you’d read it and doesn’t want you to be lukewarm any longer. God also knows that when you’re on fire in your faith, there is nothing He cannot do through you. No goal is too big or dream to far away that you can’t achieve. It’s time to grab the hot water faucet, open it all the way so your legacy can be remembered in the way it was meant to. Hot!
