Where's Your Lighthouse? #389

Have you ever felt off, or something just wasn’t right? When nothing seems to be going your way. It’s better a few days later, but you still feel like you’re floating down the river without a paddle. I tell myself, “This too shall pass,” to give me hope. But the hamster wheel keeps spinning, and I don’t know how to get off of it.

I ask myself questions like these, trying to find an answer:

  • What’s your lighthouse when the waves are high?

  • What's the staff you lean on when you get weary?

  • What’s your paddle that gives the canoe direction when life’s river is raging?

  • What’s the compass that brings you back to your north star even in the bleakest of moments?

  • Even deeper yet, what’s your real reason to get out of bed in the morning?

You have your own symbol, your own reason. Maybe it’s money, responsibilities, or a sense of “have to” that keeps you trudging along. If you’re feeling a little off, then I want you to know that we all struggle with loss of purpose or direction at times. It’s going to be okay. My goal today is to give you something to help you weather the storms, ride the waves, or just navigate life in general.

But before I get to it, I would like to warn you about a few things. I’ve taken advice from the gurus, and many of these tactics are good; I have used them. There’s one method that works for me. Influencers will tell you to find your core values, set goals, establish priorities, or have rules of life. All good. People of faith will tell you to hold God’s right hand, take refuge in Him, accept His forgiveness, or walk in the fruits of the Spirit to guide you. Again, all good.

These practices seem easy in theory. Sure, we can check our goal list, filter decisions through core values, and tell ourselves we are forgiven because of the blood of Jesus Christ. But what I’m talking about is something different than theory. Something tangible so you can find peace.

Here are some tips that may not cost a lot but pay big dividends. Purchase a 6’ staff, buy a special flashlight, have a canoe paddle in the corner, designate a candle that only burns when you feel discouraged, have an old-fashioned compass on your nightstand, and hold it in the morning, or grab your Bible and read any page. God’s Word has a way to steady your uneasiness. The point is that there is something tangible that can remind you that the storms of life shall pass.

If you think this is dumb, just remember your blanket or teddy bear that you used to hold when it stormed. Those tangible toys got you through it then, so why not use something now? I think there's power in something you can hold or see that reminds you that God has been faithful before and will be faithful again. Sometimes all we need is a tangible reminder to stop looking at the waves and start looking back toward the Lighthouse.
