Two Words = A Big Difference #359

If you’d like to hear this message instead of reading it, tune in to the Living Your Legacy Podcast.

There’s a single two-word phrase that continues to rock mankind like it did over 2,00 years ago. These two words carry so much meaning because 100% of the decision is in our hands. We determine how much or when we’ll go. Jesus said, “Follow me” to his disciples, and in that moment, they had to decide, yes, no, or maybe later. Those words carry as much weight now as they did then.

Today, in our me-first world, it’s more socially acceptable to resemble the rich man who asked, “What does it take to have eternal life?” He expected something easy, like a simple tithe, but instead Jesus replied, “Sell your possessions, give to the poor, and follow me.” Those words hit hard, causing him to leave as he wanted or needed his possessions, his wealth, and his way of life. He couldn’t give up everything. It’s sad to think, but we’re more like that rich man than we’d like to admit.

Jesus called at least five of His disciples with two words, “Follow me,” and they did. All five left their old lives behind to walk and live with Jesus every day, not knowing where or the results. I’m sure they had doubts or questions as they traveled and slept outdoors. But they also knew that at no time did Jesus say, “Follow me to the resort where we’ll relax at the pool and drink wine.” But instead, He said just the opposite by instructing His followers to pick up their cross and follow Him. There’s no relaxing in that.

To be clear, I struggle with these two words too. Like you, I’ve said, “I will follow you, Lord.” But sometimes it’s on my terms and when I want. Most of the time, my responsibilities, bills, or way of life pull me in the opposite direction. For when I take my eyes off and forget who I’m following, I’m usually left standing there holding regret like it's a weight. But I wonder, is following many directions better than following one wholeheartedly? I don’t think so, it just doesn’t feel right.

Right now, is God asking you to do the same, follow Him? Is there something in your life that you know that you need to leave behind to move forward? Is there someone you need to forgive to be set free of the burden you’re carrying? If you’re struggling with that answer, just know that the Lord knows where He needs you, and that’s closer to Him. That’s why the tugging on your heart that won’t go away. It’s because you’re not moving.

I can’t promise that life will get easier, but at the end of the day you legacy will be built on who you follow and who follows you, so take those two words, “Follow me” seriously. I believe they are the epitome of a legacy because we all want future generations to build upon the love we’ve shared, the lessons we’ve told, and the values we’ve lived to resonate in their lives. Today’s the day you move forward by leaving what’s old behind and live your best legacy. Others will notice and you’ll change the world one life at a time.
