There's A Lion In The Street #395

It's easy to imagine a lion in the street. Now imagine one standing outside your front door. You reach for the doorknob, look out the window, and there he is. Suddenly, staying inside feels like the smartest decision you could make.

Since retiring, I've found myself standing at that door wondering what’s next more often than I'd like to admit. Every opportunity sounds exciting at first until the whisper begins. "What if you fail? What if this isn't what God wants? What if you disappoint people?"

Then this week, I realized that Solomon had already described what I am feeling in Proverbs 26:13. Since reading it, I've been asking myself the question, “What’s my lion?” Have you ever stopped to ask yourself that?

Personally, I think the sluggard stayed in the house because he believed the wrong lion. So have I. I guess the lion that stopped the sluggard didn’t need to roar when a whisper worked.

Your lion may be fear, failure, comfort, or opinions of others. I know this lion of excuses and how he routinely disguises himself and asks questions like, “What if I’m not good enough or let others down? But I can tell you that every time we listen to this lion, we stop from opening the door and stepping outside. It’s like we are waiting for there to be no lions at all. We’ll be waiting forever.

The problem isn't that there's a lion. The problem is deciding which one deserves your attention.

Throughout Scripture, another Lion appears: the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He doesn't whisper fear. He simply says, "Follow Me." He’s not promising you an empty street free from obstacles, but He does promise you that you will not walk alone.

Maybe the lion isn't blocking your purpose after all; maybe it's standing at the entrance to it. So if you want to do something worthwhile and live a great legacy, then it’s time to walk towards the right lion.

Tomorrow morning you'll face your lion again. One who whispers, “Don’t,” and the one who says, “Follow Me.” Because your future won't be determined by whether a lion stood in your path. It will be determined by which Lion you followed. So don't let the imaginary lion keep you from following the real Lion.
