The Fig Tree #338

You’ve probably read about the curse of the fig tree found in the New Testament. I see that story differently now and believe that we can learn valuable lessons that apply it to living our legacy.

For example, when Jesus and the disciples were walking he saw the fig tree from a distance so He went to it looking to eat some figs but found none, only leaves. He then declared that no one would ever eat figs from the tree again. Everyone knew it wasn’t the right season for figs, but He was trying to make a point about the leaves were signifying that summer is close and the Kingdom of God is near. My question to you is, if there are leaves on your tree right now, are you producing any fruit?

Fig trees also drew people to them for shade and solace. Nathanael pleaded with God for purpose or answers while sitting under a fig tree. Later, Nathanael asked Jesus, “How do you know me?” Jesus replied, “I saw you under the fig tree.” This is a great reminder that Jesus not only sees the fig tree from a distance but He also sees who sitting under it. It also reminds us that He sees you and hears your pleas too. Knowing that should give you comfort and peace.

Jesus references the fig tree when he says, “That a good tree cannot bear bad fruit and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit, for each tree is known by it’s fruit.” This too should motivate us enough to take action because we will be known and remembered by the fruit we produce.

Do you often wonder what your purpose is? Nathanael thought that his purpose was in buildings but Jesus stepped in and had other plans for him.  If you haven’t discovered yours yet, maybe the Lord has other plans for you too and He will reveal them. So I guess your fig tree matters and the sooner your recognize that the fruit from it is meant for others, the more purpose you’ll have.

Now, you may feel like you’ve made too many mistakes in the past to do anything significant. I get that because I’ve made plenty. Or you think that no one wants to sit under your tree or wants what you have to offer. I have those doubts too. Or you may sense that your tree can never be what it’s meant to be because of the roadblocks standing in your way. Me too. All of these doubts are lies that are stunting the growth of the fruit of your legacy. So stop believing them because they’re hurting you and your impact.

In conclusion, today’s your 2nd chance to live a new legacy that will be relevant for generations because of the fruit you produce now. Never forget that Jesus sees you sitting under your fig tree and He’s listening to you just like He saw Nathanael. He knows what you’re going through and is ready to rejuvenate your tree of legacy to help it provide fruit, shade, and comfort to others who need it. He’s asking you to tend to it today so others can be blessed by the fruit of your legacy tomorrow.
