What's The Ending? #323
It’s my goal to change your mindset from leaving a legacy one day to living one now. I fear that if you don’t, then one day you’ll look back and wish you would have taken action sooner. So if you want to make a difference in God’s Kingdom and create a legacy that impacts your family or others for generations, then keep reading.
Let’s start with the end in mind by using a technique called reverse engineering. It means envisioning the end of your life, what you want it to look like, and work backwards. Start by asking yourself things like, “How do I want to be remembered? What did I stand for? How did I treat others? When my name is mentioned, what’s the first thought that comes to their mind? Etc.” Change the questions to what fits, but once you get the answers, start looking for tools to help you get there.
The concept of reverse engineering is not new and I bet you use it already. For example, when you want to paint the bedroom a new color, you see it in your mind first. Then you go to the hardware store to purchase the paint, brushes, pans, etc. because you see the end before you get started. I believe that reverse engineering is a way of life, where we see the end and figure out a way to get there. So why not think of your life’s legacy in the same way?
Below is a bell curve that represents your life. The x-axis is for years and the y-axis can be productivity, output, impact, or whatever you want it to be. The point is that we all have a life bell curve that has a beginning and an ending, but it’s what we do inside of the curve that creates a legacy.
In conclusion, I never used to think about impact or my legacy, but if the average life span in the United States is 78.43 years, then I’m past halfway. So now, the bell curve motivates me as it should motivate you to get going and start living the legacy we were created for. We all have a legacy we envision to leave, but instead of leaving one, reverse engineer it back and start living one. Remember, God had you in mind in the beginning and He has a plan for you in the end, so what will you do in between?
