See Ya At The Well (John 4) #345

The story about the woman from Samaria with Jesus at Jacob’s well not only highlights how He can show up unexpectedly, but it also depicts how the power of true heart transformation can impact others. This woman came to the well in the afternoon because she was embarrassed to be seen in public. But He knew that, and it’s why He sent the disciples away so He could meet with her.

Even though Scripture does not say that she had cried out to God, hoping that He would remedy her situation, I bet she did. She probably felt ashamed for having once had five husbands and for living with another man, but Jesus knew that and still waited to speak with her.

What she had prayed for was standing right in front of her, and yet she didn’t see it. Sounds like a Divine appointment to me. Jesus was setting the tone for greater impact by interacting with someone that society had said no to. Even His Jewish disciples wouldn’t have allowed a female from Samaria to speak with Him, especially alone. Nothing was going to stop Him from missing such a significant appointment.

How many times have you avoided someone just because? It may not have been intentional, but if you had heard and valued them, their life may have changed. You’ll never know. Or maybe you’ve missed a Divine appointment with God yourself because you’ve felt that you’re from the wrong end of town, or have made too many mistakes to be worthy of such an appointment. Or is it possible that you’ve prayed for God’s intervention and when He tried to provide it, you questioned it?

It’s okay to say yes; we are humans searching for God’s presence and acceptance, after all. We’ve all made mistakes and carry baggage along the journey, too. But the longer we carry the baggage of shame and rejection while trying to replace it with anything that makes us feel better, the thinner our testimony becomes.

The second half of that story is just as impactful because the woman went back into town and told others about meeting the Messiah. She told the very people that she once avoided that He knew everything and still gave her living water. Her transformation was so thick that many Samaritans believed in Jesus without seeing Him because of her testimony. It didn’t take long before this Divine Appointment became a spontaneous sermon at the well, and many more believed.

Your interactions are more than just a quick, “How you doing?” Perhaps 30 seconds can become 10 minutes, allowing you to listen, answer questions, and share your story. Regardless of whether you feel stressed, burdened, and unequipped, there’s someone who may know your history and needs to hear your story. It gives hope to someone who needs it. So here are three ways you can keep your Divine appointments.

First, go to the well and ask God to meet you. Then ask Him to help you see those appointments before they happen so you don’t miss them. The second way is to stop down playing your worth. Remember that the Christ waited for you too at your well because you’re worth waiting for, just like she was.

Lastly, tell others, but tell them with evidence and conviction. If your lifestyle contradicts your words, then others won’t believe that you’re any different. Share the mistakes you’ve made since the well and how He’s helped you overcome them. Speak from your heart and people will believe in Jesus too because you loved Him enough to speak to them.

Remember, the testimony of your life impacts others, so why not share it. See you at the well.
