Remind Them... Now Remind Him #374

If you’d like to hear this message instead of reading it, tune in to the Living Your Legacy Podcast.

Last week, you were encouraged to reintroduce yourself and to remind your children every day that you love them. I believe a daily reminder will pay dividends for generations, but you have to start. This week, I’m asking you to add a second daily reminder, not to a different person but to our Heavenly Father that says, “Hey ‘Dad’, it’s _____. I’m your son/child. I love you.”

Now, understand I am not minimizing the name of God. I am merely trying to help you communicate regularly with your Heavenly Father. One with no walls, no barriers, no pretenses, just honest and open communication in both directions. I know that God desires a relationship with His children, so why not start the conversation by “sending” Him a message today?

I literally just tried this for the first time, and it wasn’t 20 seconds before I started crying in love and surrender. Yes, I did feel bad for saying “Dad” at first, but you know what? Using my language broke down a wall in my heart, and for the first time in a long time, I sincerely believed that I am a child of God.

Maybe you’ve been talking to God your whole life, but today is the day you start talking to Him like a child talks to their father.

Regardless of whether you start your prayer with "Our Father, who art in Heaven," or, hey Dad, it’s me, both remind you of who you are and whose you are. Before you move on with your day, try it right now. Close your eyes and say, “Hey Dad, it’s me.” You may be surprised how quickly the walls come down. Something happens when “Hey, Dad, it’s ____” breaks the ice. It allows the real you to show up, not with fancy words, just you.

I believe that implementing this simple daily prayer reminder will change your life, just as reminders to your children will change theirs. It changed mine in one prayer.

You can stop trying to be perfect and focus on being present. When you start your day with “Hey Dad, it’s _____, your son/child,” you’ll see yourself differently, you’ll speak differently, and you won’t be afraid to fail because you know that He is ready to help you up. I know that deep down, we still want to hear from our earthly dad, and now you get the chance to hear from your Heavenly one, too. What a great way to start your day, all with a daily reminder.

As time goes by, the connection will grow stronger, and when He directs you with, “Hey ____, it’s Dad, that’s not for you,” or “Hey, _____ it’s Dad, do this instead,” you’ll listen. Even your eyes will open when you see the path that’s ahead of you and the blessings in front of you.

The similarities in how these two daily reminders are uncanny. Your own children will grow accustomed to hearing from you daily and come to you more often. And you will seek God throughout your day, not just once, and look forward to His response. Your children will understand the reason you stayed in the background was to put them in the spotlight, just like God wants you to be in the spotlight with His light shining through you.

If you truly want a legacy that lasts for generations, get to know God in such a way that your grandchildren tell their kids that ‘Grandpa didn’t just believe in God, he talked with Him.’ Start living your legacy today by strengthening relationships with daily reminders.
