Know Your Anchor #343

Hebrews 6:19-20 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever…

A little over seven years ago, we got a puppy. During every stage of training, we gradually expanded her boundaries from cable/stake to leash to free rein in the yard. Today, she lives and runs free because she knows her boundaries, listens to our voice, and stays by our side on walks.

Can you relate to the stages of life? From toddlers to teenagers, we were leashed to something. For example, we knew to clean our rooms and be back home when the street lights came on. Then, as adults, we got married and became tied to our family, not because we’re forced to like when we were 10, but because we loved and chose to be attached to something bigger than ourselves.

I believe we can learn some valuable lessons from our dog, Tia. One, be anchored. Two, know your boundaries. Three, know the voice of the Master and stay beside the One who’s walking with you. If you can follow these principles, then your spirit will have free rein regardless of your situation because just like Tia, you’ll be returning home.

So how can we be anchored, and how do we choose? You can be anchored to a lifestyle to that keeps you in the same rut you’ve been in for years. How’s that working for you? Or you can also be anchored to your favorite actor or movie star, but no matter how many songs or movies you enjoy, you’ll still feel hollow inside because they’re false anchors. There’s always hope, though, because you can choose another anchor. One that’s sure and steadfast for your soul. One that sees behind the curtain that you’re trying to hide behind. An anchor who stands in front of you on your behalf. That true anchor that your soul longs for is Jesus Christ.

The second thing you can do to live freely is to know your boundaries. Boundaries are not meant to bind you or force you to be someone you’re not. They’re meant to allow you to run freely in where you’re designed to run. When boundaries work well in your life, you’ll know it by how you feel after the action, but when you run outside the boundaries, you’ll feel regret in your decision. So instead of trying to get out, enjoy the space inside the boundaries.

The third thing is to be so familiar with the voice of the Master that you’ll enjoy being close to Him. The Holy Spirit will only tighten the tension of the leash when He sees you veering off the path as He brings you back to it.  Remember, the leash isn’t meant to choke you; it’s there to guide you.

So just imagine the legacy you can live if your anchor is sure and steadfast, if you know His boundaries, His voice and when you walk beside the Lord everyday. There will be no obstacle too big, no valley too wide or no height to high that could keep you from separated from His love and achieving your dreams. Just imagine the joy you’d feel when you walk in stride with the Lord and go where He calls you to go. How that will feel. There will be no distance to great to keep you from impacting the world. So choose the right anchor as if your soul depends on it, because it does.
