Keep On Climbing #385

Have you ever noticed that almost every movie, book, or story involves someone on a journey? They’re always climbing, moving, searching, overcoming, or chasing something greater. Maybe that’s why those stories connect with us so deeply, because there’s something inside of us that knows we were never meant to stay still, but created to keep moving toward something greater.

Today is not a motivation to overachieve; it’s a revelation that we’re supposed to climb the mountain and there’s a reason behind it. Speaking of mountains, the word mountain is used 310 times in Scripture. Thirty-three times mountains are called the Mountain of God or Holy Mountain, and one verse says the House of the Lord that is sitting on the mountain.

Major events took place at the tops of the mountains. Noah’s Ark came to rest on a mountain after the flood subsided. Isaac was to be sacrificed on the mountain. Moses went up the mountain several times. The transfiguration of Jesus with Moses and Elijah took place on a mountain. The devil took Jesus to the mountain top to tempt Him. And in Revelation, John sees the new Jerusalem coming down from Heaven while sitting on a mountain. There must be a significance to the mountain.

Jesus Christ himself would go up the mountain to pray. The Son of Man valued His relationship with the Father so much that He was willing to climb a mountain free from distractions and draw as close to God the Father as possible. I’m not suggesting that you should literally climb a mountain tomorrow, but if we are to mimic Jesus by drawing closer to God, then shouldn’t we climb the mountain in our lives to do so?

I get it, the path up the mountain is rocky, covered with weeds and brush, littered with “trash,” and you feel alone. But the fact is, you’re not alone. There’s a Guide ahead of you, clearing the path so you can keep climbing and draw closer to God without distractions.

Try this at the beginning of each day. Say to yourself, “I will climb up the mountain today, no matter what’s ahead of me, trying to stop me.” Then at the end of the day, ask yourself, “Did I keep climbing, drawing closer to God in my thoughts, actions, or deeds? Or did I take two steps back, leaving me further away?” Then do it again tomorrow because it’s a second chance to keep on climbing.

You want to live a legacy, then keep on climbing. Trust me, the top will be worth the climb.
