They say that things go better with a plan. But no matter how prepared I might be, things don’t always go as planned. Every day, changes come our way, trying to disrupt us. If you think about it, the only thing constant is change. It’s a part of life, we may not like it, but I guess we should be used to it.
When it comes to change, it boils down to a few choices. We can overplan and try to avoid it; we can roll over and accept it; we can adapt and overcome it; or we can make it. Sometimes the fear of change is so stifling that we’re too paranoid to try anything new, or we just sit back and let life run by us. Either way, the result is the same. We miss moments and opportunities we’re not supposed to.
God knows that change is a part of your everyday life. That’s why His presence is close to you, His refuge is ahead of you, and His hand guides you. But the truth is, He didn’t create you to fear change or be conquered by your circumstances. He designed you to rise above the adverse situations and be more than conquerors (Rom 8:37).
Speaking of conquerors who deal with change. High School wrestlers plan before the match, then the plan goes out the window, and the winner left standing is the one who adapted to change and overcame adversity best. I saw this happen at the semi-state meet, when a top-ranked wrestler was defeating the lowest-seeded wrestler, 10-2, with 20 seconds to go. Something happened in the heart of the unranked wrestler because he decided not to accept defeat and made a change. Not only did he change the result with an upset, but he also shocked the fans and motivated about 100 other wrestlers to defeat their Goliath.
So if the only thing constant in life is change, then how you handle it is how you’re remembered. That young wrestler will be remembered because he showed everyone that they can overcome a bleak circumstance, climb a mountain, or defeat a Goliath if there’s still time on the clock. So why can’t you?
Right now, God may be asking you to change your direction, or He’s orchestrating change around you to bring you back to Him. Either way, you can choose to change and live a legacy that’s remembered for generations. People are watching what you do when things change. What will they remember?
If you’re reading this, then there’s still time on your clock, and your legacy is waiting to be lived like a conqueror. There’s a lot for you to do, people to impact, places to go, battles to be won, and differences to be made. So will you reclaim your role as more than a conqueror and defeat the changes thrown your way, or will you roll over and be pinned down by them? Change is happening whether you like it or not. What are you going to do about it?
