Carry The Mantle #407

Have you ever met someone and immediately thought of their father or mother? Maybe it was their smile, something they said, or the way they greeted you. You might have even said, "You remind me so much of your dad." That's one of the greatest compliments a parent or grandparent could receive, especially when the similarity goes beyond a family resemblance.

I've wondered what people might recognize in my children and grandchildren. Will they see my personality and my mistakes, or my faith and character? I didn't like my answer. But instead of complaining, I wanted to change it. So I decided to look at three men, separated by hundreds of years, who shared something remarkable, hoping they would inspire me.

Elijah was a prophet who followed God, even when it was difficult and unpopular. Just like us, he experienced fear, discouragement, and exhaustion, yet he continued serving the one true God. One person he influenced was Elisha, who followed him and learned from his example. In fact, Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit. When God took Elijah up into heaven, his mantle fell to the ground. Elisha picked it up and continued the work God had called him to do. Others declared, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha" (2 Kings 2:15, ESV).

Think about that. They didn't simply recognize Elijah's mantle. They recognized God's power and calling now resting upon Elisha. Elisha wasn't Elijah, but the spiritual resemblance was unmistakable.

Generations later, John the Baptist appeared wearing clothing of camel's hair and a leather belt, similar to Elijah's. But the connection went far beyond what he wore. In Luke 1:17, the angel declared that John would come "in the spirit and power of Elijah." John wasn't Elijah, nor did he carry Elijah's actual mantle. But he demonstrated similar boldness, obedience, and commitment to God's calling as he prepared the way for Jesus Christ.

Three men with different callings, spanning hundreds of years, and yet we still talk about them today. That's a divine legacy that began with a man who stood for God. Maybe God is asking you to live in such a way that someone else recognizes His presence in your life and wants to follow Him too. Elijah faced hardships, and you will too, but God's purposes extend beyond our lifetimes. Your mantle, your example, or your legacy could influence someone generations from now, just as Elijah's life did.

That brings me back to my children and grandchildren. Two generations right in front of me. Someday, someone may see me in them, and I hope they do. I pray they recognize Grandpa's faith in Jesus Christ, and that the legacy he tried to live out is now being carried on in their own way.

The mantle isn't just what we leave behind. It's what others see in us that's worth carrying forward. Our children, grandchildren, friends, coworkers, and people we influence are watching us, learning from our words and actions. So here's my question: If someone picked up the mantle of your life today, what would they be carrying?
