A Mother's Love #357

If you’d like to hear this message instead of reading it, tune in to the Living Your Legacy Podcast.

I know it’s not Mother’s Day, but I was reminded of the love, sacrifice, and influence that a mother can have on her children in a book titled, Pushing to the Front. This book was written 100 years ago, but the lessons are just as valuable today as they were then. By the end of Friday Focus, I hope you’re encouraged to either reach out to or remember everything your mother/mom did for you.

When Abraham Lincoln was elected President, one of his first comments was, “All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." The President of the United States wasn’t afraid to praise his mother publicly because he knew that his success was made possible by her footsteps in the dirt many years earlier. Many years later, journalist Dorothy Dix echoed this belief when she said, “In the shadow of every great man walks his mother.”

The successful men and women that we know today have been built in secret by their mothers' guidance, love, and even discipline. A loving mother will often sacrifice her personal desires for the sake of her children’s happiness and well-being. A mother can have a short-term memory as she labors in childbirth, yet as soon as the child is born, she forgets the 30 hours of pain. Mothers will love you through the mess, regardless of how long it takes to clean up. So whether it’s a successful millionaire or a convict, the mother only sees the once innocent child that she always loved.

A strong mother will continually be teaching life lessons to her children. She demonstrates a work ethic at the start of the day, having things ready for the children when they awake. She teaches time management by preparing meals, cleaning up, and helping with homework after a long day's work herself. Her labor is never in vain or questioned because she works while everyone is asleep. She can organize chaos by getting four young children in car seats just to go to the store. A mother teaches fiscal responsibility by showing the children how to save their money. A mother will pass along her love of books by reading stories every night before bed. When walking through the woods, a mother will use an overturned log to remind her kids of the strength of family by the colony of insects.

A mother’s love and her discipline is received in just a glance. She does not need to yell, “Stop,” because her eyes say it all. Those same eyes can also welcome a child into her arms in acceptance and forgiveness. A mother is not ashamed to cry with her child when they’re hurting, letting them know that she feels their pain too. That glance can be felt across a long distance because the child knows his/her mom is waiting.

There is nothing like a mother’s love because it never varies or fails. That love bandages the wounds, kisses the forehead and reminds the child, “It’s going to be okay.” A mother continues to pray for her children all the days of her life.

Unfortunately, this same love can be taken for granted inspite of being demonstrated with small acts. Though children leave the house to pursue their own interests they will always know where home is because mom is there.

In conclusion, a large part of your legacy has been etched into your heart by your mother. Do not forsake her or forget her and trust that she always loves you, prays for you and wants you to be your best in whatever you do. So reconnect with your mom today and don’t be afraid to praise her in public because she will never stop shouting about you in the town square or Facebook.
